I use Twitter to stay connected with colleagues, learn from thought leaders around the globe, and immediately see breaking news during the workday. Although I don’t go there every day, I spend probably 10 minutes 3x a day checking into Twitter, consuming and sharing information.
(I know, I constantly live tweeted the conference, but that was to share it with those who couldn’t be there with us.)
I always suggest a few things for those who start out, here’s the first. Make your Profile count!
Pay particular attention to your bio – you have 140 characters to entice me to follow you. If your bio is interesting, it might capture me in a moment!
Fill in your location and time zone to help others near you find and follow you, and put a link to your website or blog – it’s a free inbound link, and part of the benefit of being social.
If I’ve found you or you’ve followed me, I’m going to do three things:
1) Check out your bio – do you have something interesting/relevant/funny to say?
2) Read your most recent page of Tweets to see if I can learn something from you
3) If I’m on the fence from steps 1, 2, I’ll check out your blog/website to decide whether to follow or not.
If you start out well, with a good bio, you’ve got the first best foot out the door.
